  • No need for more unions

As a fellow Mississippian, I'm somewhat taken aback by the position of MS Congressman Thompson. This country must work to improve our work ethic to bring them in line with the rest of the world. Unions will not do this. Experiments in government unionization have caused incalculable harm to this country. Remember specifically strikes by garbage workers, firemen and teachers. Look at the decline in education results versus other industrialized countries since teachers were allow to unionize and thus work on their terms. Generally speaking, unions mean less work and less productivity at a higher cost. That translates to many companies moving good paying jobs offshore just to survive. For those not familiar with the carnage left by unions, remember Eastern Airlines, Chrysler, GM and most of our larger steel companies that no longer exist. All victims of unions. Unions had a valid role to play in the early 1900's, but now they are antiquated and counterproductive. Competition makes employers treat their employees right and give them good benefits. The employee always has the ultimate lever. He can decide where he wants to work. If any TSA employee is not happy with the job they signed on for, they have the freedom to elect to leave that job and take one more suited their likes, without any legislation required. That is the ultimate lever and freedom. Our government is right to prohibit unionization of TSA and other governmental employees.
