What are the infrastructure underpinnings of big data and big databases. Users of big data have been concentrating on the tools to mine the information in big data. In this conversation, we will discuss what it takes to house, maintain and serve up big data. Such data stores are characterized by a mix of relational/structured data and non-structured files such as video, images, PDFs, and office documents. A number of new solutions are emerging – different types of storage, different approaches of optimizing the data center to handle big data.

Tom Temin is the host of Federal Drive weekdays from 6-9 a.m. on Federal News Radio 1500AM. Tom Temin has 30 years experience in journalism, mostly in technology markets. Terry Halvorsen is the Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the Department of the Navy (DON). As the DON CIO, he functions as the DON’s senior official and advisor on Information Management (IM), Information Technology (IT)/cyberspace (including national security systems) and Information Resources Management (IRM) matters. Mr. Halvorsen has oversight for the IM function within the Office of the Secretary of the Navy, Chief of Naval Operations, and Headquarters Marine Corps. Additionally, he develops strategies, policies, plans, architectures, standards, and guidance; provides business IT transformation leadership for the DON; and ensures development and acquisitions of IT systems are interoperable and consistent with the Department’s objectives and vision.
John Montel serves as the Electronic Records Manager for the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) headquartered in Washington, DC. Mr. Montel works the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) where he focuses on information governance, electronic records, records management, and supporting bureaus and offices seeking access to centralized electronic information for discovery and other means.
David Bray is the Chief Information Officer for the Federal Communications Commission, overseeing the Commission’s efforts to modernize legacy systems and transform technology partnerships in telecommunications, broadband, competition, the spectrum, the media, public safety, and security. He previously served as Executive Director with the National Commission for Review of Research and Development Programs of the U.S. Intelligence Community and later received the National Intelligence Exceptional Achievement Medal. The interagency team he directed also received the National Intelligence Meritorious Unit Citation.
Jack Nichols is a Solutions Architect with CDW-G supporting all Federal Civilian Agencies. He meets regularly with the technology leaders of agencies to help plan and architect cost- effective technology solutions particularly in the areas of virtualization, data center consolidation and Cloud computing. Prior to coming to CDWG, Jack spent 9 years at the U.S. House of Representatives where he was the Director of Enterprise Operations.
Lee Vorthman is a 16-year technology veteran, is the Chief Technology Officer for the Federal Civilian Agencies at NetApp U.S. Public Sector. In his role as CTO, he establishes the technical direction and overall strategy for the Civilian region. Vorthman joined NetApp in March of 2011 and most recently served as the Cyber Practice Lead where he developed and executed a strategy to address the cyber security market for the Civilian, DoD, Intel, SLED and Healthcare regions. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Semper Secure – an organization focusing on the development issues in cyber security across the state of Virginia. Prior to joining NetApp, Vorthman supported full-spectrum cyber operations at Harris Crucial Security Inc., worked in network defense at SAIC, and served in the Navy as an Intelligence Analyst.
