OMB director taps VanRoekel to lead management team

The Office of Management and Budget today named Steve VanRoekel to lead the management team.

An OMB spokeswoman confirmed VanRoekel will not step into the position of deputy director for management (DDM), but will oversee OMB’s management efforts until a new DDM is nominated.

VanRoekel also will remain as the federal chief information officer.

Additionally, OMB named Norman Dong to lead its Federal Financial Management Office. Dong has been the deputy controller since April 2012. He steps in for Danny Werfel who became the acting IRS commissioner last week.

VanRoekel moves into the DDM role after Jeff Zients left the position May 1 after four years on the job.

VanRoekel has been with OMB since August 2011, after spending time with the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Federal Communications Commission.

Werfel had been tapped twice to be the acting DDM when Zients was acting as OMB director over the last two years. So with Werfel moving to the IRS, VanRoekel’s experience as the managing director of the FCC put him in position to lead OMB’s management efforts.
