Proposal to revamp federal internship programs for grad students

The Partnership for Public Service weighs in.

It appears the competitive hiring process isn’t helping federal agencies land grad students, and isn’t helping graduate students get federal jobs.

Earlier this week Federal News Radio talked with Tom Shoop, the Editor in Chief of Government Executive magazine. He told us that the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration has a proposal that would essentially scrap the competitive federal hiring process for graduate students in favor of a revitalized internship and apprenticeship program.

Tim McManus is the Vice President of Education and Outreach at the Partnership for Public Service. The Partnership likes the proposal, but also understands why unions are concerned.
