Defense Deputy Secretary Lynn to step down

William J. Lynn III is stepping down as the Defense Department’s deputy secretary.

Lynn informed Defense Secretary Leon Panetta of his plans last week, according to a DoD release.

Lynn has agreed to remain on the job until this fall after his successor is chosen.

As deputy secretary, Lynn helped create a new space policy, the department’s first operational energy strategy and a cyber strategy that included the creation of the U.S. Cyber Command.

Prior to starting his DoD career in 1993, Lynn served on the staff of Senator Edward Kennedy as liaison to the Senate Armed Services Committee

“Bill Lynn has provided outstanding advice and counsel to this department and to the nation over the course of his long career,” Panetta said in the release. “I will rely on his experience and expertise during this transition period. His service will be greatly missed.”
