Col. Gregory Gadson has taken command of Fort Belvoir in Virginia, marking the first time ever a double amputee has become the garrison commander of a major installation.

Gadson, a 1989 West Point graduate, was injured in May 2007. He returned to active duty to serve as director of the Army Wounded Warrior program.

The change in command also coincides with the 100th year of Fort Belvoir’s service.
