Army to cut thousands of jobs

The Army is about to cut more than 8,700 civilian jobs, Federal Times reports.

Half the cuts will come from the Army’s Installation Management Command — that’s almost 12 per cent of the total workforce at the command. The Army Materiel Command will lose about about nine per cent of its 13,000 employees.

Army Secretary John McHugh says agencies can’t just use contractors to replace the civilians they’re letting go. The Federal Times reports a memo from McHugh on the cuts suggests using reductions in force, total or partial hiring freezes, buyouts or early retirements to meet these goals.
