The end of CRs?

The House passed a continuing resolution this afternoon that will keep your agency open until November 18.

But House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) wants that to be the last continuing resolution for this fiscal year.

“It’s a bit of a stretch,” said John Stanton, a House reporter at Roll Call In Depth with Francis Rose.

First, Congress faces a tight deadline, Stanton pointed out. Next week is an abbreviated week with the Columbus Day holiday, and the House is on recess for the following week.

At the same time, lawmakers will have to take into account the deliberations of the debt super committee, whose recommendations are due Nov. 23.

Cantor has also opposed passing mini-buses or separate pieces of the budget before Nov. 18, Stanton said.

The friction comes not necessarily at spending levels but with policy riders attached to some of the appropriations bills, many of which are “very, very controversial,” he said.

The result is the potential for “more brinksmanship and gridlock and ‘Oh my god, are we going to have a government shutdown?'” Stanton said.
