The Army awards new contracts to bring commercial cloud services to about 100 thousand Army network users. The one-year, blanket purchase agreements will go to Microsoft and Google and will have four one-year option periods. Each company will offer 50 thousand subscriptions to their respective cloud services. The cloud networks will supplement the enterprise email and collaboration services offered by the Defense Information Systems Agency, which already serves more than 1 point 4 million Army users. The Army expects about 10 actual thousand Army users to qualify for the services already. The Army’s acting chief information officer, Mike Krieger, says the contracts will not compete with DISA’s enterprise system. Google says its new users can now attend classes and complete assignments using a tablet or smartphone.
