OPM's new closure policies aim to clear up confusion

The Office of Personnel Management wants to ensure the confusion over the status of federal offices during Hurricane Sandy is not repeated for future natural or man-made events. OPM officially released the new language Tuesday and updated its dismissal and closure procedures by incorporating the lessons learned from last month's superstorm and last January's ice storm. The language tries to simplify and clarify what federal employees should during natural or man-made disasters. OPM also wants agencies to refocus their efforts on telework so as many employees are able to work during an emergency as possible.

    So, we finally learned how to fix this problem. Oh wait! Didn't we learn from the last two blizzards? Maybe our Lib administration should set up a new office to "solve" this problem after every major storm, in perpetuity. Clearly it is a full time job for some people, and they are clearly not yet professionalized!

    I'm getting tired of the right wing nut jobs criticizing every aspect of the Administration, regardless of the facts. The OPM (not "Lib" OPM, just OPM) is doing its' job. There is no need for another new office.

    If you are telework-ready and/or required to work during one of these closures due to weather or other natural disaster, are you required to take annual or personal leave if your home doesn't have power and your office is closed? That came up in our office during Sandy, and no one knew the answer.

    Joe -- I got an answer from our reporter, Jason Miller, who was at the briefing. He said, that question was asked there. Here's the answer...if your home doesn't have power and your office is closed, then it is an excused absence... no personal leave needs to be taken...
