GSA considers alternatives to track contractors

For decades, the General Services Administration has contracted with the company Dun & Bradstreet to provide unique identifying numbers for businesses. These numbers — called Data Universal Numbering System or DUNS numbers — allow GSA to track contractors and other recipients of federal funds. But the cost of using this service has grown from $1 million in 2002 to about $19 million per year under the current contract.

    Really?
    Why not use the Tax Identification Number, or TIN (Social Security or Federal Employer Identification Number)? The IRS has forced state governments into, basically, not issuing any payment unless there is a federally issued TIN. That is how they track / identify "vendors" ... . Just as zip codes now have a 4 digit add-on, the TIN could include numbers at the end to denote physical location. Everyone has a TIN - why are we re-inventing the wheel, and paying for something that can be had for nothing?
