Guilty Plea From Lunch Lady in Guns Case

March 31, 2005 - 6:48am

MANASSAS, Va. - A cafeteria worker whose son brought weapons to a Gainesville middle school pleaded guilty Wednesday to felony weapons charges.

Naomi Lewis told a Prince William County court that she saw a rifle and ammunition in the back of her van when she and her son got to Bull Run Middle School on the last day of classes June 18. Lewis, 39, of Haymarket, said she covered up everything, then locked the van.

The boy later went back and used a spare key to retrieve three guns from the van and take them inside the school. An assistant principal caught the seventh-grader with the weapons inside a bathroom, and no one was hurt.

During Wednesday's hearing, a county police officer testified that Lewis initially denied knowing about the guns, but later changed her story and admitted seeing a gun and ammunition.

Sentencing was set for Jan. 6. Prosecutors recommended a five-year suspended sentence, plus mental health and family counseling.

Lewis' son, who is now 13, has been ordered to a state detention facility for an indefinite period. He could be held until he turns 21.

"I hope that she finds some way to make it up to the students here and the parents who had to go through that experience," parent Terry Scott said Wednesday outside the school.
