Welcome to Ask the Chief Information Officer brought to you by VION on Federal News Radio 1500 AM. Every week Federal News Radio interviews CIO's of federal agencies about the latest directives, IT challenges and successes. 'Ask the CIO' with your host, Jason Miller.
This is an encore presentation. The interview originally aired on June 25, 2009.
The Federal Aviation Administration has received a lot of attention for its Next Generation Air Transportation system. It has been the subject of congressional hearings, federal audit reports and private sector concern.
But the FAA also is in the middle of several other projects that will impact both NextGen and its overall operations, says CIO
Dave Bowen.
Bowen says naturally the $32 billion NextGen program receives the bulk of attention, but at the same time, he is overseeing the consolidation of data centers, about 20 cybersecurity initiatives and the move to a more centralized technology infrastructure.
Among those cyber initiatives the agency is working on are reducing the number of its Internet gateways, and making the software code for its Web sites more secure, Bowen says.
Additionally, the FAA is following the Obama administration's lead and making more information about air travel available. It also has allocated more than $1 billion in stimulus funding to the nation's airports for improvements.
