Multiple sources have confirmed that Vivek Kundra today will be named the new Office of Management and Budget administrator for e-government and information technology.
Sources say an internal memo went out to OMB staff announcing his nomination and welcoming him to the staff.
Kundra will replace Karen Evans, who retired from government Jan. 20 when the Bush administration's term ended.
Kundra comes to OMB from the Washington city government where he was chief technology officer. Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty named Kundra as CTO in May 2007 where he was responsible for developing, implementing and maintaining the District's IT and telecommunications infrastructure.
He also oversaw the development and implementation of major citywide applications, such as online mapping and real time data feeds from 259 databases.
Kundra also established and oversaw IT enterprise architecture and Web site standards and advised agencies on technology systems to improve services to businesses, residents and visitors.
Some sources say Kundra was considered for the Obama administration's CTO position as well.
As OMB administrator, he will be responsible for the 25 e-government projects, the nine Lines of Business initiatives, cybersecurity, the Federal Enterprise Architecture, overseeing the federal IT budget of more than $70 billion and most other major IT initiatives.
Before coming to the DC government, Kundra was Virginia's Assistant Secretary of Commerce and Technology, and held executive positions with Evincible Software, a company focused on electronic signatures and identity management for the financial services and defense sectors, and Creostar, where he advised clients in government and industry on IT governance and strategy.
