Robert Lentz, the Defense Department's lead for cybersecurity and information assurance, is retiring after almost 35 years in government.

Lentz's last day will be Oct. 2.

He says he plans on starting a consultancy business and take care of some personnel matters.

Lentz came to DoD in 2000 and has been the deputy assistant secretary of Defense for information and identity assurance in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense, Networks and Information Integration/Chief Information Officer.

He also is the chief information assurance officer and oversees the Defensewide information assurance program, which plans, monitors, coordinates and integrates these activities across the military.

Before coming to the DoD CIO's office, Lentz worked for 26 years at the National Security Agency in the areas of financial management and technical program management.

Lentz appeared on the Federal Executive Forum in July and discussed some of DoD's cyber priorities. He says keeping the military's network secure, but fast is the top one.

DoD also is focusing on helping to secure industry's networks and rolling out a robust identity management network to help soldiers access information more securely.

Lentz says DoD also has more than 40,000 personnel on the network who are certified as cyber defenders, and education and training remains a top priority.

"The number one challenge is clearly we need to move from the static defense model…to move toward this dynamic defense capability and reduce the consequences of penetration," he says on the show, sponsored by the Trezza Media Group and the Flyzik Group.
