In 2003, Joni Swedlund relocated to Washington, DC from her overseas assignment in Tokyo, Japan to help found Deloitte’s Federal Financial Services practice. She brought with her 10 years of global industry experience focused on servicing Wall Street clients and global organizations. Joni is a financial services and information technology leader with global experience advising clients in private and public sectors. In her role, Joni is responsible for bringing the appropriate resources from Deloitte’s consulting, tax, audit and financial advisory groups together to best serve her clients. She is also responsible for bringing key thought leaders from Deloitte’s commercial and federal practices together to deliver the latest trends and leading practices. Joni has been a key thought leader around the identify theft issue, advising clients on how best to protect the public they serve, and has lead efforts to bring private and public sectors together on the topic of reform in the financial services industry.

The Federal Financial Services practice has realized a 128% compounded growth since inception. Joni has accomplished this by assembling high performing teams to bring value to her clients. The missions faced by her clients are critical to the confidence and economic stability of our Nation. Examples of where Joni has added value to her clients include:

– The work to modernize business processes and technology prepared the FDIC for the recent unprecedented number of bank closures; this included providing front-line perspectives from the banking industry that helped shape their three year strategic plan back in 2006. Great flexibility was required in agreeing to go live with the updated asset management system six months ahead of schedule with the additional request to scale to 5 million assets vs. the originally requested 100K assets. The insights are now being shared with other U.S. regulators and global central banks. Joni and her team supported over 200 bank closures providing the FDIC with technology, loan workouts, and data archival support. Her team is now helping the FDIC research the causes of the crisis to improve future policy.

– The work on preventing identity theft and mitigating risks for the IRS has resulted in over $240M of protected revenue. The IRS now has identity theft indicators and processes to assist taxpayers who are victims and to help measure results.

– The work on the Automated Under Reporter (AUR) program to help enhance case selection and more effectively target soft notices has resulted in the IRS collection of $800M additional revenue.

– The FISMA/Risk Catalog work performed for the IRS Wage & Investment (W&I) Division helped to streamline manual intensive processes which resulted in a reduction of full-time employees by 25%, consulting spend by 25%, and processing/execution time by 35%. This IRS team received the W&I Commissioner’s award two years consecutively.

– The IRS work focuses on defining a results-driven operating model for critical transformational programs like the modernization of its core tax processing platform. This program will enable faster refunds, payments, account adjustments and notices, as part of the expected benefits. This innovative approach is being adopted widely by the IRS and setting a new standard for program integration.

Joni routinely connects her clients with the private sector to discuss common issues and strengthen relationships. She has taken an active role in the public-private cooperation around Financial Regulatory Reform and is advising her clients on the implications of the recently passed legislation to help them prepare. Most recently, her team co-hosted an event bringing together executives from all of the regulators and several banking institutions.

Outside of serving her Federal Financial Services clients, Joni has supported the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington, DC, and is now focused on supporting the launch of a new foundation (Pattistrong Foundation) for one of our recent alumni diagnosed with terminal brain cancer; the foundation is focused on supporting global women’s business issues.
