Zients out as OMB deputy director for management

Jeff Zients, the deputy director for mangagement and chief performance officer at the Office of Management and Budget, has left the agency.

Jeff Zients, the Office of Management and Budget’s deputy director for management, has left the agency.

An email sent to his address at OMB returned the message, “Beginning May 1, 2013, I can no longer be reached at OMB.”

An OMB spokesperson confirmed Zients’ departure and provided a comment President Barack Obama made about Zients on March 4.

“Since I took office, Jeff Zients has served as America’s first chief performance officer and the deputy director … for management of the Office of Management and Budget. He’s made our government more efficient. He’s saved taxpayers a lot of money. He’s stepped in as acting director of OMB not once, but twice, including leading up to the fiscal cliff. So there’s no question that Jeff’s skill and versatility have served the American people very well. I expect it will continue to serve us well in the future.”

Zients has been the DDM and chief performance officer for four years, and spent a majority of that time as Acting OMB Director.

The Senate confirmed Sylvia Burwell to be OMB director on April 24.

There is no word on who will be the next DDM and CPO.

During his tenure, Zients put his weight behind several major efforts including the expanded use of strategic sourcing, the inclusion of private sector ideas and analysis of federal processes through the President’s Management Advisory Board. He also signed a memo expanding the authorities of federal chief information officers.

He had less success in leading the effort to reorganize the federal government, however.

President Barack Obama named Zients the DDM and CPO in April 2009.
