SAMMIES: Federal Employee of the Year

Tonight is the big night -- the Service to America Medals are being awarded.

The SAMMIES are tonight! The Service to America Medals Gala recognizes outstanding work by federal employees.

This morning on the Federal Drive, Max Stier of the Partnership for Public Service announced the winner of this year’s Federal Employee of the Year: Pius Bannis. Bannis is a field office director for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in Haiti.

Federal News Radio has introduced you to all of the SAMMIES finalists, and I got to talk to Bannis recently.

He was able to expedite the immigration of more than 1,100 Haitian orphans in the weeks after the devastating earthquake. His work was especially incredible due to the destruction going on around them. Bannis insists the work could NOT have been done without the efforts of his entire team.
