Aggregating data online isn’t always an easy task for governments, especially when that data has to do with a budget.

Many state and local governments have been attempting to do this for years, and one organization wanted to learn about best practices.

The U.S. Public Interest Research Group recently released a report, Following the Money: How the 50 States Rate in Providing Online Access to Government Spending Data.

Phineas Baxandall is a senior analyst for tax and budget policy, and explains how they put the assessment together, and what federal agencies can take away from what some states are already doing.
