Three contractors vie to build next generation of DoD trucks

The Defense Department named AM General, which makes the Humvee, plus Lockheed Martin and Oshkosh Corporation. The three will build competing prototypes.

The Defense Department has awarded three companies the chance to build a new generation of trucks. They’ll partially replace the aging Humvees.

The Wall Street Journal reported DoD hopes to eventually buy 18,000 joint light tactical vehicles. Winners were AM General, which makes the Humvee, plus Lockheed Martin and Oshkosh Corporation. The three will build competing prototypes.

Not winning development contracts were General Dynamics, BAE Systems and Navistar International.

Last year, Congress nearly eliminated the whole program because of ballooning costs caused by changing requirements. The new vehicles will have a price cap of $250,000 each, versus half that much for each Humvee.
