For some federal employees, this shutdown was déjà vu all over again. Cindy Blythe is a management program analyst with the Coast Guard. She had survived the 1995-1996 shutdown. When we spoke to her on Oct. 1, she said the current one was forcing her family to make some tough financial decisions. But, she told us, “this too shall pass.” Emily called Cindy to see how she’s faring now.

The shutdown forced the Centers for Disease Control and Prevent to furlough nearly 70 percent of its workforce during flu season. CDC Director Tom Frieden noted, microbes and other threats did not shut down. So one company took it upon itself to monitor them. Josh Gray is the vice president of research at AthenaHealth.

It’s been a month and two days since Aaron Alexis gunned down a dozen colleagues at the Washington Navy Yard. Now the Navy has appointed a task force to oversee the recovery — both of its operations and employees. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus has directed Retired Vice Adm. Dennis McGinn to lead the Task Force.
