Auditors say the federal government needs to pay immediate attention to a billion-dollar program to supply fuel for the Afghan army.

The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction says there’s no proof the fuel is actually being used by security forces. It could be lost, stolen or diverted to insurgents.

The report includes comments from Pentagon commanders, who reject the idea of reducing the budget. They say it is impossible to accurately estimate fuel use.

The United States plans to pass control of the program to the Afghan government in less than four months.
