Military families could use all the help they can get. The Defense Department recognizes that and is working to expand its network of military and civilian professionals dedicated to family support. Robert Gordon, deputy assistant Secretary of Defense for military community and family policy, tells the Family Resilience Conference in Chicago that the Pentagon understands the challenges facing military families. Not only are their loved ones deployed to war zones, but they’re also taking on the aftermath of earthquakes, tsunamis, wildfires, blizzards, floods and tornadoes. Gordon says the rest of the nation could learn a lot about resilience from military families and apply those lessons learned to other vulnerable populations.
