A government cyber initiative has funded a project to scan smart phones. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency or DARPA paid for start-up Duo Security to develop an app to scan smart phones for vulnerable or unknown components.

According to the cybersecurity website DarkReading.com, unknown files would automatically be sent to Duo Security for further analysis. So far the app, called X-Ray, is only available for Android phones.

The app was downloaded 15,000 times in the first eight hours it was available, according to the site.

The software project was one of the first to get funding under a DARPA initiative to spur innovative security research, DarkReading.com reported.
