The Homeland Security Department is losing its executive director of procurement operations. But that doesn’t mean it’s losing the skills and knowledge Soraya Correa brings to the agency every day.

Sources confirmed that Correa will be leaving her acquisition position and moving into a more senior management role.

Sources say by early 2011 Correa will become the deputy associate director for management at the Citizenship and Immigration Services directorate.

“The events leading to my selection unfolded very quickly in the last couple of weeks, and I made my final decision to accept the job last week,” Correa wrote to her staff in an e-mail obtained by Federal News Radio.

“This was not an easy choice because I truly am proud and honored to be the leader of this outstanding organization,” Correa said in her e-mail. “However, all good leaders know that the continued growth and development of themselves and their organizations is essential.”

Correa also worked at Immigration and Customs Enforcement where she was the director of the office of acquisition management before coming to DHS headquarters.

Over her 28-year career in government, Correa also worked in senior acquisition management positions for the Naval Sea Systems Command, the General Services Administration, NASA and the former Immigration and Naturalization Service.

During her time as executive director of procurement operations at DHS, Correa was a driving force behind the department’s development and implementation of the EAGLE and FirstSource multi-billion dollar technology contracts. She also oversaw the recent release of the request for proposals for Eagle II.

“As I will say many times in the days ahead, this is one of the best experiences I have had in my 30-year career in federal government,” according to Correa’s e-mail. “Each and every employee of OPO has made my tenure here an exciting, interesting, and worthwhile experience.”
