The Labor Department gave $68,000 in prizes for applications to help connect unemployed people with job positions.

The Labor Department gave $68,000 in prizes for applications to help connect unemployed people with job positions.

Labor launched the app contest through Challenge.gov.

One of the winning apps — Where are the jobs at? — used occupational employment statistics to compare salaries for occupations by location. Eat Shop Sleep was another winning app that gives health and labor reviews of restaurants and hotels.

“These contests tapped into the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit that has been the hallmark of America’s economy for generations, ” said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis in a statement. “I am so pleased that the Department of Labor’s small investment was able to spur the creation of such user-friendly applications and to help better inform Americans.”
