OFPP kicks the strategic-sourcing door wide open
Administrator Joe Jordan said he views the possibilities as everything from new contracts to take advantage of volume discounts to standardizing terms and conditions to save on administrative costs. GSA FAS is reorganizing around 14 strategic sourcing areas.
Sharpe sets 10 priorities to assure success at FAS
Tom Sharpe, the commissioner of the Federal Acquisition Service at the General Services Administration, is focusing on 10 areas to make the organization more responsive and efficient. Sharpe also plans to meet with vendors and employees to improve their satisfaction with FAS.

Jon Jordan, the deputy commissioner in the General Services Administration's Federal Acquisition Service, retired Nov. 3. Bill Sisk has been named to replace Jordan on an interim basis.

VA, GSA each pushes major IT acquisitions to next steps
The Veterans Affairs Department will award a $5 billion IT hardware contract in the next two months. GSA will release a request for information for cybersecurity tools in the coming days. Both are examples of a healthy and busy fourth quarter for acquisition.
GSA offers second round of buyouts
The General Services Administration is offering buyouts and early retirements to 1,022 employees. The employees have until July 20 to apply and must separate from service between Aug. 3 and Sept. 30.

GSA considers alternatives to track contractors
For decades, the General Services Administration has contracted with the company Dun & Bradstreet to provide unique identifying numbers for businesses. These numbers — called Data Universal Numbering System or DUNS numbers — allow GSA to track contractors and other recipients of federal funds. But the cost of using this service has grown from $1 million in 2002 to about $19 million per year under the current contract.
Agencies taking a more disciplined approach to managing vendors
GSA, Commerce and others are using supply chain management techniques to buy smarter and more efficiently. Federal Acquisition Service Commissioner Steve Kempf said a recent survey of their contractors will help influence the next generation of schedules.
GSA cancels one of Oracle's IT schedule contracts
The software company received more than $357 million in sales from its schedule contract in 2011. GSA's decision affects Oracle's professional services offerings under the IT Schedule 70 Program.
