GAO: DoD and VA need to communicate more

A program designed to help severely wounded veterans get life-long care isn’t working the way it should. The Government Accountability Office says poor communication between the Pentagon and Veterans Affairs is impacting the effectiveness of the Federal Recovery Coordination Program. GAO investigators say that it is hard to identify eligible veterans because the Pentagon and VA don’t have a specific classification for severely wounded, ill or injured service members. They want to see more oversight by the VA, and they say the VA should develop a workload assessment tool for staff. They also recommend the VA document staffing decisions.
