Air Force moving cyber duties to new squadron

Several cyber functions will move from the Air Force Network Integration Center to the Air Force Space Command's new Cyberspace Support Squadron.

The Air Force Network Integration Center is going to be restructured, the Air Force announced on Tuesday. AFNIC will refine its focus on network integration and engineering services, while its cyber functions will be incorporated into Air Force Space Command’s Cyberspace Support Squadron.

The squadron will take over cyber training programs and keeping records, forms and publications. In addition, AFNIC’s maintenance functions will move to the 24th Air Force base in Lackland, Texas.

“These changes will allow AFNIC to focus on its core mission, and ultimately make AFNIC the premier Air Force organization providing network integration and engineering services for the Air Force,” said Lt. Gen. Michael Basla, vice commander of AFSPC. “Those individuals whose responsibilities are aligned to other units in Air Force Space Command will be in a position to make an even greater impact on the Air Force cyberspace mission.”

The Air Force decided to make the changes after a study commissioned last year recommended them.
