American Federation of Government Employees president John Gage has announced he'll retire from his post at the largest federal-employee union. Gage has served as national AFGE president since 2003.

For the third straight month, the Office of Personnel Management received fewer federal retirement claims than projected, according to monthly federal retirement data. OPM also met its processing goals for the month and the longstanding backlog of claims has fallen by 21 percent since January.
If you ask the typical federal/postal worker what his or her greatest job-related fear was, many would answer they are afraid Congress will change their retirement rules and base their benefits on their highest five-year average salary. Yet the likelihood of losing the current high-three system is small compared to other, more real threats, Senior Correspondent Mike Causey says.
While some federal agencies in Washington, D.C., struggled to get their work done on Monday due to power outages caused by a recent storm, thousands of Patent and Trademark Office employees worked remotely as part of the agency's successful teleworking plan.
Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) said a realistic approach is needed to reform the Senior Executive Service. His bill would automatically increase pay for highly rated SESers. However, the bill leaves out controversial provisions requiring mandatory agency rotations for SES members. The pragmatic approach is necessary to "rescue" the program which has struggled with recruiting new members.
