One of the first victims of the budget axe is often professional training, says Linda Petersen, a former longtime Office of Personnel Management official now with Graduate School USA. Petersen, who joined In Depth with Francis Rose said too often training, which carries long-term benefits is not viewed as being part of an agency's strategic vision.
The initiative aims to provide federal employees with college credit for certain agency-created human resources classes. Federal employees could apply the courses toward degrees at colleges and universities.
DoD is examining how to keep servicemembers' "fires lit" once the military services transition to a mostly peacetime status. Gen. Martin Dempsey said some units will be aligned with a particular region of the world. DoD also will take advantage of advancements in technology to help with training.
The two influential senators say the mistakes the Defense Department and others made in the 1990s during the last serious budget reductions can't be repeated this time around. Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) said budget cuts shouldn't be balanced on the backs of the acquisition workforce. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) added reductions in acquisition staff mean the government will pay more for goods and services.
The Public Buildings Service Western Regions conference scandal is reverberating across government. A new Federal News Radio online survey found other agencies are feeling the effects of GSA's problems. More than half of all respondents said their agency canceled conferences or meetings.

Navy CIO Terry Halvorsen issued a policy making IT security training provided by the services to sailors and Marines equitable to commercial accreditations. He said the department shouldn't have to pay for civilian education courses when DoD programs work just as well.
Feds looking for career guidance and motivation are increasingly going outside of their agencies to find it. Employees from 20 agencies attended a recent "flash mentoring" session hosted by the Office of Personnel Management's HR University. More seasoned human resources professionals served as mentors.
The government's training portal has nearly 10,000 users. The HR University now offers college-accredited classes and in-person "flash mentoring" events. The Office of Personnel Management and the Chief Human Capital Officers Council launched the portal last year as a way to save agencies money on professional development training.
