The IRS is reorganizing its Tax Exempt and Government Entities Division.That's the office at the center of a controversy about whether it targeted conservative groups' applications. Under the new move, technical law specialists and support staff will shift to the IRS Office of Chief Counsel. Marcus Owens, the former head of the Exempt Organizations Division, now with the law firm Caplin and Drysdale, spoke to Federal Drive about how fundamental a change the move is.

Hagel shakes up Pentagon's organizational chart, hopes for $1B in savings

The Defense secretary issues specific directions to implement a 20 percent cutback in the size of his own sprawling support staff, including the elimination and consolidation of several senior positions. Gen. Martin Dempsey will deliver plans to cut the joint staff by 20 percent in the coming weeks, and all military organizations commanded by three or four star generals will do the same.

HUD reorganization will close dozens of field offices, affect 900 workers

A major restructuring at the Department of Housing and Urban Development will close or consolidate dozens of the agency's field offices nationwide and affect 10 percent of its 9,000-member workforce. HUD officials said the current organizational model is not sustainable given the constrained budget the agency faces.

Tangherlini sought details of GSA IG's investigation tactics

The acting administrator of GSA said he met with IG Brian Miller and David Shea after accusations the IG investigator's tactics were overly aggressive in looking into the recent SmartPay Conference. Tangherlini also expects to receive suggestions on how the CIO reorganization would work, and how to go forward with the reduction of FAS fees in the coming weeks.

GSA to centralize oversight of IT, HR after top-to-bottom review
