In a memo outlining DOD plans for dealing with the threatened government shutdown, Deputy Defense Secretary William Lynn explains who gets paid and when.
Military members would continue to earn wages in the event of an April 8 shutdown of the federal government, but they'd have to wait to collect them until Congress agrees on a budget, a senior administration official said.
U.S. troops could be required to report to work without pay if a budget clash in Congress results in a government-wide shutdown, according to draft planning guidance circulating in the Pentagon.
Continuing to operate at 2010 funding levels under a continuing resolution would be a crisis for the military, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Monday. He made the remarks at a briefing detailing DoD's proposed budget for 2012.
Under President Obama's proposed FY 2012 budget, federal employees' pay would still be frozen for two years, military pay would be raised 1.6 percent, and hundreds of federal programs would be terminated and reduced.
