Hagel makes 'difficult choice,' civilian furloughs to begin July 8

NOAA plans for 4 furlough days, begins talking to unions
Employees at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will be furloughed four days starting in July, acting Administrator Kathryn Sullivan wrote in an email to staff Monday.

No civilian furloughs in 2014, Pentagon promises
DoD says it's committed to making sure civilians are not furloughed in fiscal 2014, which begins in October. But if sequestration remains in place, the alternative would almost certainly be involuntary reductions in force for both civilian workers and uniformed service members, officials say.

NWS could furlough 5,000 employees to cover budget shortfall
The National Weather Service says it must furlough as many as 5,000 employees for 13 days by Sept. 30, unless Congress allows the agency to move around funds within its budget.
