More Money heading to Yemen
President Obama has asked for as much as $63 million in aid for Yemen for this fiscal year. The State Department says that's up from about $40 million in 2009. Yemen also received an additional $67 million in special funds for counter terrorism and border control efforts in 2009. Even though the Pentagon is not yet made a final decision, General David Petraeus, head of U.S. Central Command, said last week the United States would significantly increase its security assistance program for Yemen.

Hunted
A radical American imam who communicated with the Fort Hood shooting suspect and called him a hero was once arrested in Yemen on suspicion of giving religious approval to militants to conduct kidnappings.
Yemeni authorities are now hunting for Anwar al-Awlaki to determine whether he has al-Qaida ties. Al-Awlaki, who has used his personal Web site to encourage Muslims around the world to kill U.S. troops in Iraq, disappeared in Yemen eight months ago, according to his father. Yemeni security officials say they believe he is hiding in a region of the mountainous nation that has become a refuge for Islamic militants.

Yemen is in trouble
U.S. Intelligence officials say Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has transformed itself from a regional threat into the network's most active affiliate and has global ambitions. That Al Qaida affiliate is based in Yemen, which has long been criticized for allowing western resentment to flourish and terrorist organizations to grow. The Yemeni government is facing a significant problem now. Not only is Al Qaida a growing threat there, but a separatist movement is well underway and rebels are growing more and more bold in their attacks.
