Tension grows over Pentagon cuts
"Blindsided" is the word that Va. Senator Jim Webb used when he addressed Deputy Secretary of Defense William J. Lynn. Lynn was one of three Pentagon officials who appeared before the Senate Armed Services Committee to discuss spending cuts at the Pentagon. The focal point for Webb and other members of the Virginia Congressional delegation is the Joint Forces Command, in Norfolk and Suffolk. It's an area with a huge military presence, including the world's largest naval base. It's slated to be closed.

DoD struggles to explain JFCOM closing
Some Senate Armed Services Committee members are unhappy with the Pentagon's lack of transparency and inclusion in the decision to close the base. Defense Deputy Secretary Lynn said the Pentagon held almost 30 meetings before concluding that JFCOM needed to be closed. Lynn also offers insight into future of DoD CIO and BTA.

DoD readying new approach to IT acquisition
Congress called on the Pentagon to develop a more agile or rapid acquisition process in the 2010 Defense authorization law. The military wants to model its approach after the one used for the B-52 bomber where the goal is smaller and incremental changes made over time.

U.S. Seeks Allies in Fighting Cyber Crime
Deputy Secretary of Defense William Lynn traveled to Ottawa recently to try and drum up support for a new international organization to combat cyber warfare. He told the Canadian audience the U.S. can't defend its networks alone, and pointed to increasing threats from hackers and computer viruses. The visit marked the kick-off a U.S.-led initiative to create such an international organization. Discussions have begun with several countries.

DoD vows to become a leaner organization
Deputy secretary William Lynn calls for transferring billions of dollars from non-essential programs and administrative functions to warfighter mission areas. DoD also looking at six cross-cutting areas such as healthcare, acquisition and personnel policies for savings. The military services and Defense agencies have until July 31 to figure how to make this happen.
