Lieberman puts reorg authority on 'bucket list'

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) has sponsored legislation to revive the fast-track authority requested by President Barack Obama. Other senators, however, want more details before signing off on the plan that, in part, would allow the President to merge overlapping business- and trade-related agencies.

New trade enforcement office draws on cross-agency expertise, personnel

President Barack Obama announced Tuesday the creation of a new office, the Interagency Trade Enforcement Center, to curb unfair international trade practices. ITEC, which will operate from within the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, will be staffed with Commerce Department and the intelligence community officials, among others. Administration officials cited a "whole-of-government" approach in standing up the office.

Outside experts see White House merger plan hitting choppy waters

There's waste and confusion among the six trade- and business-focused agencies that the White House wants to consolidate. That's the conclusion of four panelists who debated the merits of the proposed merger at the American Enterprise Institute, a free-market Washington think tank. They disagreed, however, on the best solution.

Analysis: Government reorganization 'challenging terrain' for Obama

President Barack Obama has asked Congress for the power to merge federal agencies in an effort to make government more efficient and consumer friendly. Obama will call on Congress to give him a type of consolidation authority last held by a president when Ronald Reagan was in office. Analysts and former government insiders congratulate the president for the massive plan to streamline services. But they warn it will be tricky.
