USASpending moves to ‘big data cloud'

The General Services Administration is moving its huge database of federal spending information to a big data cloud. The USASpending.gov site will make the move to a platform that can take in federal contract award information from a variety of sources and perform data analytics. The system is based on the Apache Software Foundation's open source Hadoop platform. USASpending lets users search for federal spending information, both prime contracts and subawards, by using simple keyword searches.

New Ethics.gov portal stores WH visitor logs, FEC filings

The White House announced the launch of Ethics.gov, an online portal housing ethics-related data, including White House visitor logs, election filings and lobbying disclosures. The creation of a single, centralized database for lobbying and ethics information was a 2008 campaign promise by then-candidate Obama and follows a string of data-storing sites, such as Data.gov and USASpending.gov.

Agencies to justify not using cloud computing to OMB
