The only solution that will demonstrate House Republican leaders are serious about governing is to put a fully-funded DHS bill on the floor right away, says In Depth host Francis Rose.

DHS Secretary Johnson baffled by 'absurd' budget conversation

A vote in the Senate could come as early as Thursday on a bill that would fund the Homeland Security Department beyond this Friday. If passed, the bill would still have to clear the House, before being sent to the President's desk. While Congress was busy making moves Wednesday, DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson went on the offensive to ensure Congress doesn't shut down his department. 30,000 DHS workers would be sent home and the trickle-down effect on state and local governments and law enforcement organizations would worsen if Congress doesn't pass a bill, Johnson said.

Cause, effect of DHS morale problems tied to leadership vacancies

Despite progress in confirming a new secretary and deputy secretary, DHS still features a large number of officials in acting roles. Former Secretary Tom Ridge told lawmakers the department cannot build nor sustain a mission-focused culture with so many non-permanent positions. NTEU says pay freezes, budget cuts and the government shutdown are more to blame for low morale across DHS and the entire government.

Senate cyber bill faces bumpy road ahead

Lawmakers at odds over critical infrastructure protection provisions. Sen. McCain promised to introduce a new version of a comprehensive cyber bill to focus on collaboration and information sharing instead of regulation of critical infrastructures. Sens. Joseph Lieberman and Susan Collins refute the criticism, saying they've held 10 hearings, hundreds of meeting and pleaded with others in the Senate to offer comments.
