DC-area officials cheer federal 'shelter-in-place' snow strategy

Capital region officials cheered the Office of Personnel Management's "shelter-in-place" option for snow emergencies. Having people stay at the office during sudden or extreme snowstorms would lessen gridlock, officials told lawmakers Wednesday. They also urged area workers to know their children's school emergency policies and have backup childcare arrangements in place.

NTEU calls on Congress to boost mass-transit tax benefit

One of the largest federal-employee unions has called on Congress to pass new legislation to retain a pretax mass-transit commuter benefit, which is set to be cut nearly in half starting in January. In a letter to members of the House and Senate, NTEU President Colleen Kelley said reducing the $230-a-month transit benefit would affect tens of thousands of federal employees that rely on public transportation to get to and from work.

IGs push for greater whistleblower protections for contractors

Whistleblowers at government contractors need better protections against reprisal and need to know how to contact agency inspectors general. Two IGs and a whistleblower awaiting trial were among the witnesses at a hearing of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Reform Subcommittee on Contracting Oversight. It is considering legislation to extend federal whistleblower protections to all contractors, subcontractors and local governments receiving federal funds.

GOP proposal would freeze federal pay, cut workforce by 10 percent

Senate Republicans are proposing an extension of the federal pay freeze in order to pay for a continuation of a payroll tax cut favored by congressional Democrats and the White House. The proposal, which was assailed by some Democrats and federal employee unions, also includes a provision to cut 10 percent of the federal workforce or about 200,000 positions.
