Mass transit idea wins SAVE award

The government will save money on mass transit for federal employees thanks to this year's SAVE award winner. Frederick Winter's idea to switch eligible feds from a regular transit fare to a reduced senior fare will lower the cost of those employees' travel by 50 percent.

OMB names finalists, opens voting for SAVE Award

The four ideas received the most votes over the last four months out of more than 10,000 ideas. This is the fourth year OMB has held the SAVE Awards. The winner presents their idea to President Obama and gets it included in the 2014 budget request.

Feds offer ideas on agency cost-cutting

The White House kicked off the fourth annual SAVE Award, seeking cost-cutting ideas from those who know best how to help Uncle Sam pinch pennies — federal employees. Employees have until July 24th to submit ideas for reducing government spending.

OMB tells CFOs to run SAVE Award ideas by broader audience

The administration will kick off the 2012 program to find money-saving ideas in a few weeks. Agencies will get to vote on a final list of ideas in the next few months.

NASA not waiting to adopt winning SAVE idea

The 2011 Save Award winner met with President Obama Monday to present his idea to create a lending library at NASA. Matthew Ritsko said his suggestion was built off of an effort by the space agency to become more efficient. He said two related efforts are underway to improve how NASA manages and shares tools and equipment.

Feds come up with 38,000 ways to make the government better

OMB will now review all submissions under the SAVE Award. It plans on choosing a winner in November. The winning entry will be included in the fiscal 2011 budget and be presented to President Obama.
