Two former Pentagon officials, Rudy deLeon and Dov Zakheim, join Pentagon Solutions with Francis Rose to discuss a range of challenges facing the Defense Department, including the threat of sequestration.
The Pentagon will deal with budget challenges in 2013, but those aren't the only issues DoD planners will face. Rudy deLeon, senior vice president for National Security & International Policy at the Center for American Progress and a former deputy secretary of defense, says the U.S. relationship with China will be a high-profile challenge for the Defense Department in 2013.

Rudy DeLeon, the former deputy defense secretary, told In Depth with Francis Rose the new strategy and the key ideas behind did not come out of the blue. "This has been coming for a while," he said, including the possibility of military pay and benefits being on the table.
After the passage of the 1986 Goldwater-Nichols Act, the Pentagon stopped fighting the Congressional push for the military services to come together. Instead, it innovated joint operations beyond the wildest hopes of reformers in Congress. Can that model be exported to the rest of the federal government?
It took more than four years, but Congress succeeded in revamping the organizational structure of the Pentagon over the strident objections of the military's own leadership 25 years ago.
