Exec. order breaks new ground in declassification

Late last month, President Obama signed an Executive Order making significant changes in the way that classified documents are handled. In addition to extending classification for documents dating back to the Vietnam War era, the order also calls for important new guidelines for how to share the information contained in classified documents. Recently, two of the authors of that Executive Order talked about their work before a transparency conference at the American University.

CIO, CHCO councils developing cybersecurity workforce models

The councils will focus on three main areas to develop competency framework. Agencies have until Jan. 15 to submit data about how they classify cyber positions. Interagency working group also will conduct a survey of cybersecurity workforce in the spring.

White House launches governmentwide review of information sharing

President appoints Mike Resnick to be the new senior director for information sharing policy. Congress questions how the White House position will mesh with the Program Manager for the Information Sharing Environment.

Combining the Security Councils

President Barack Obama announced Tuesday he is combining White House staffs dealing with international and homeland security, predicting the change will make Americans safer. The Associated Press is reporting, Obama also is creating a new office intended to communicate more effectively with other countries about U.S. security policy. The Homeland Security Council, created after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, will be kept as a venue for discussing issues concerning domestic security, including terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, natural disasters and pandemic influenza. Its staff will be integrated into the National Security Council.
