Members of Congress from both parties have signaled they're ready to consider privatizing air traffic control, or at least changing how it's funded. One reason is the FAA's struggle to modernize the systems that support safe flight. Many in Washington are wondering whether the system would function more efficiently as a commercial entity. Trish Gilbert, executive vice-president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA), joined Tom Temin on the Federal Drive to explain NATCA members' concerns over the proposed switch.

Obama signs bill modernizing aviation system

President Barack Obama has signed legislation Tuesday that modernizes the nation's aviation system, speeding up the nation's switch from radar to an air traffic control system based on GPS technology. The law also opens up the skies to military, commercial and privately-owned unmanned drones.

FAA workers furloughed in shutdown get back pay

Nearly 4,000 workers who were furloughed in a two-week partial shutdown of the Federal Aviation Administration this summer were told Friday in an email that they will receive back pay.
