Employee unions to form coalition about feds
Several federal employee unions will join a new group to raise awareness about the federal workforce. The National Treasury Employee Union also is holding its annual legislative conference to lobby lawmakers on key issues such as furloughs and health care.

Promotion freeze proposed for all federal workers
In addition to the numerous amendments under consideration decreasing agency budgets and staffing levels, two new amendments would hit federal employees on the General Schedule, freezing all promotions across government.

AFGE, NTEU vie to represent TSA workers
Transportation Security Administration Administrator John Pistole granted collective bargaining rights to the nation's 40,000 airport screeners. The decision comes eight months after Pistole became TSA administrator.

Five-year pay freeze, more federal job cuts proposed
The Republican Study Committee introduced the Spending Reduction Act that would eliminate USAID and three other small agencies. It also would take spending back to 2006 levels in fiscal 2012. The legislation also would cut or reduce spending in 100 programs such as agency travel budgets and require the collection of unpaid taxes from federal employees.

Unions push back against deficit commission
Federal employee and management groups sent a letter to President Obama urging him to reject proposals to cut workforce benefits made by the Deficit Commission. The letter comes on the heels of a new bill to codify many of the commission's recommendations.

FEHB premiums to increase by 7.2 percent in 2011
OPM said the rise in costs is lower than the industry standard. Employees who choose family coverage will see an increase of $22.90 a month. Open season starts Nov. 8.
