CDC's Rothwell epitomizes 'top shelf' leadership
Overseeing the Division of Vital Statistics at the Centers for Disease Control's National Center for Health Statistics in Hyattsville, Md., Charles Rothwell was called a man who "epitomizes everything a top shelf leader should be." He has been named one of Federal News Radio's Top Leaders in Federal Service.

New metrics to help agencies determine value of social media
GSA led a 12-member interagency working group to create a set of measures specifically aimed at defining the usefulness of social media for agencies. The agency also released an API that lets users create tools to bring together government social media feeds in one place. Both tools are called for in the Digital Government Strategy.

OMB opens door to non-federal online credentials
A memo from federal CIO Steven VanRoekel requires agencies to begin accepting usernames and passwords from commercial companies such as Verisign or Google. This is the second time the government has tried to accept commercial credentials. Experts say this time agencies and industry are better prepared to be successful.

NIH's GWAC leader moves to new agencywide job
Mary Armstead has been tapped to be the new acting associate director of the Office of Acquisition and Management for the National Institutes of Health. She is currently the director of NIH's Health Information Technology Acquisition and Assessment Center.

NIH doctor's work transforms once-fatal illness
When Princeton University football player Jordan Culbreath was diagnosed with aplastic anemia in 2009, there was only one place to go: the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute at NIH. The once-fatal illness now carries an 80 percent survival rate, thanks to the efforts of Dr. Neal A. Young.
