You may think you've heard enough advice on cloud computing. But there's always something new to learn. That's the idea behind the just-published Cloud Buyer's Guide for Government. It was produced by the Tech America Foundation. Tom and Emily spoke with Mike Hettinger of TechAmerica on the Federal Drive about this update in cloud computing.
The White House has issued six recommendations for protecting privacy in the era of big data. It's the result of a 90-day review of big data policies and practices. One of the top recommendations was to pass a National Data Breach bill, similar to the cybersecurity bill the administration proposed in 2011. Mike Hettinger, vice president for Public Sector at TechAmerica, gave industry's take on the recommendations to Federal Drive hosts Tom Temin and Emily Kopp.
In a special report, The Government Shutdown: Six Months Later, Federal News Radio checks back in with some of the companies it talked to in October to find out what long-term effects the work stoppage had on them. Overall, large and small contractors say they've lost some revenue and are seeing delays in contract awards and solicitations.

As part of its "Stop Government Abuse Week," lower chamber lawmakers will vote on 12 bills this week to help bring more accountability and transparency to the government. An updated version of the Federal IT Acquisition Reform Act is expected to be among them.

Mike Hettinger, TechAmerica's new senior vice president of the public sector, has been charged with ensuring federal contractors that the industry association is committed to the public sector for the long term. Some members are taking a wait-and-see approach before deciding whether or not to stay with the organization.
Mike Hettinger has spent more than 20 years in the federal sector and now comes over to the trade association from the Software & Information Industry Association. He worked on Capitol Hill and for government contractors.
The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee approved the Federal IT Acquisition Reform Act (FITARA) with little debate and no amendments. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), the bill's author and chairman of the committee, said the provisions to give CIOs more budget control and the IT project and program management improvements will have a big impact on how agencies spend money on technology.
