Managing what's left of the office during a government shutdown can be difficult, but keeping morale high and refocusing the agency's agenda is critical in shutdown mode.
Army and Marine Corps officials are citing cutbacks to the workforce at government-operated facilities that repair military equipment as the reason for less equipment getting back in the hands of warfighters.
Members of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee laud Beth Cobert's private sector experience. But Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) said Senate leaders do not plan to debate or vote on any nominations during the shutdown.

Lower chamber legislators could not get two-thirds approval for one bill to fund the National Park Service, and another bill to get the Veterans Affairs Department fiscal 2014 money. AFGE, NTEU and Democrat lawmakers rallied on Capitol Hill Tuesday to turn up the heat on Congress to reopen the government.

EPA also issues guidance to agencies, and OPM updates the governmentwide shutdown guidance.
OMB and GSA put out separate memos detailing steps agencies should take during a government shutdown, including "turning off" certain government websites. OMB reminded agencies to secure systems and offered advice on how to deal with third-party social media sites. GSA gave agencies ideas to minimize the impact of having to shutdown websites.
