DoD officials celebrate opening of new Walter Reed hospital
The hospital is a merger of the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. and the Bethesda National Naval Medical Center. The Army moved patients from the Washington facility to the Bethesda campus and a new hospital at Fort Belvoir in Northern Virginia.

Top GOP senators press Pentagon on specific cuts
Top Republicans on the Senate Armed Services Committee are pressing Defense Secretary Leon Panetta to spell out the "devastating effects" to the military if a special bipartisan panel fails to produce a deficit-cutting plan and nearly $1 trillion in defense cuts kick in.

Officials oppose trying terrorist at Gitmo
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Attorney General Eric Holder are expressing their opposition to a move prevent terror suspects from being tried in Federal Court. The two of them sent a letter to Senate leaders saying the Republican measure would deprive them of a potent weapon in the fight against terrorism. They also claim it could lead increase the risk of terrorists escaping justice and putting other people in danger.

Hawkins nominated to be new DISA director
Maj. Gen. Ronnie Hawkins Jr., Hawkins, who currently serves as deputy director for command, control, communications and computer systems for the Joint Staff, will take over for current DISA director Lt. Gen. Carroll Pollett.

Retraction Demanded
CIA Director Leon Panetta is being asked retract comments that he made during an interview with the New Yorker Magazine. Talking about former Vice President Dick Cheney 's views on National Security. Panetta said "When you read behind it, it's almost as if he's wishing that this country would be attacked again, in order to make his point." Senator John MCain went on the the morning TV shows to say Panneta's comments were "totally uncalled for. Cheney's criticism came on the same day that President Obama made a major national security speech.

Panetta wants full accounting of money in, money out by 2014
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta wants the department to have at least part of its books ready for audit well in advance of the Congressionally-mandated 2017 deadline. The edict could prove challenging for some components of DoD.
