Federal unions claim sneak attack in unemployment insurance deal
Two federal unions, the American Federation of Government Employees and the National Treasury Employees Union, say lawmakers removed the increase in federal employee contributions from the payroll tax extension, but added it to the unemployment insurance extension, which is part of the overall deal. The unions say if the provision becomes law, feds would see a pay decrease while everyone else would see an increase.

AFGE's strategy for 'good government' hinges on 2012 elections
With no end to lawmakers' fedbashing in sight, the American Federation of Government Employees is looking forward to 2012's presidential and Congressional elections. "Federal workers are a sane, responsible group of citizens. They vote in big numbers," AFGE President John Gage told Federal News Radio.

AFGE pushes for TSA workers to have due process rights
The Transportation Security Administration is unwilling to give airport security officers the same due process rights that other federal employees have, according to the American Federation of Government Employees, which represents TSA officers nationwide. AFGE said it planned to picket on key issues, which also included policies that allegedly discriminate against female security officers.

Democratic lawmakers trying to beat back another federal pay freeze
Maryland and Virginia lawmakers say federal employees have been singled out enough and shouldn't endure another year of a pay freeze or other benefit cuts. The Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act includes such provisions. Rep. Gerry Connolly said continued pay freezes or reduction in benefits will impact recruiting and retention of employees.

Congress tells agencies to check creditworthiness of employees
Provision in 2010 omnibus spending bill requires credit checks on employees before giving them a government credit card. Law also requires agencies to create service contract inventories, and fully funds the E-Government Fund for the first time in eight years.
